How to Properly Furnish a Small Living Room
It can be seemingly impossible to furnish a small living room in an apartment, condo, or small home. You want all the comfort and amenities, but you also want to avoid a crowded, cluttered look. That’s where we can help. We have been working with families in the Madison & Murfreesboro area for decades, and we have experience with living rooms of all sizes. Here are a few tips we’ve learned over the years!
Choose the right colors
This isn’t a hard and fast rule, but in general a room will appear larger if lighter colors are used on the walls and floors. Try painting the walls beige, off-white, or light gray. These neutral tones will help reflect light to make small spaces feel bright and open. Then use accent pieces like throw pillows, wall art, and area rugs to incorporate your favorite colors and patterns!
Utilize the height of the room
Homeowners often make the mistake of neglecting the top half of the room when designing a small living room. Large pieces of statement artwork or groups of shelves that extend towards the ceiling can help draw the eyesight up. A statement chandelier or mounted sconces can achieve the same effect in addition to adding functional lighting to the room!
Select the right seating
Although it may seem counter-intuitive, sometimes large pieces of furniture can be the perfect solution to a small living room. Rather than trying to squeeze in a sofa, loveseat,
and chair, one sectional can provide adequate seating and take up less space. Make sure to take measurements of your living room so that you can get a sectional that fits perfectly. For small rooms, we recommend angled sectionals or chaise sectionals. A chaise sectional is a great option if one side of the sectional will be exposed to a different room rather than a wall because it won’t cut off the line-of-sight between the two rooms. Sectionals with exposed legs (rather than a skirt) will help prevent the room from feeling crowded. Also, poufs and stools can provide additional seating when needed.
Incorporate furniture with hidden storage
Another great way to make the most of a small space is to include furniture with storage capabilities. A storage ottoman is a very versatile piece because it can work as a footrest, coffee table, and storage chest. If you are worried about impeding the flow of the room, look for a round ottoman that will provide more room to navigate around. An entertainment console or TV stand can also provide extra storage with shelves and drawers. If you have room for side tables, look for ones with small drawers for hiding remotes, pens, and other small items.
