Designing a Dining Room: Where to Start

Whether you have an eat-in kitchen or large formal dining room, you can create a space where friends and family will enjoy coming together to share a meal. Here are some tips to help you design a dining room that is both beautiful and functional!

The Basics

When you’re choosing the dining room table and chairs there are two factors to consider: size and style. For the first, the general rule is that you want to leave 24-36 inches between the back of a chair and a wall. This will allow people to pull out their chair and maneuver around the table comfortably.

When it comes to style, you’ll have the best results if you simply be yourself! If you love the ornate details of traditional furniture, go traditional! If clean lines and modern materials like concrete are your thing, look for a contemporary set. You can even mix and match to create a style that is unique and all your own!

Dress it Up

Once the table and chairs are in place, it’s time to have some fun! The dining room is a great place to showcase family pictures, or you can create an accent wall with a bright paint color or patterned wall-paper. A dazzling chandelier is another great way to add glamour to the space and help you set the mood with proper lighting.

Entertaining

If you are planning a large family dinner or intimate dinner party, be sure that you are prepared with plenty of counter space and seating. Consider dining room benches to help squeeze in an extra child around the table, or you can turn the dining table into a buffet instead and eat a casual dinner in the adjacent rooms. An accent cabinet can also help you create a staging area for food or drinks so your guests won’t be constantly passing food across the table.
